Mississippi ASA District 1 Spring Meeting

January 18, 2012

Dear Fellow Softball Enthusiasts,
It’s softball time already. Registration time is right around the corner. The District Meeting will be on Thursday Feb 23rd, 2012 at 6:30PM. The meeting will be at the Donal Snyder Community Center at 2520 Pass Road in Biloxi. There is a lot of new things to cover this year. So please plan to attend. Here’s some of things we have to cover:
1. Last year, we started a Buzini Championship Series for adult softball. This year we introduce a Buzini Series for J.O. Softball (Junior Olympic). I’ll have more details on it at the meeting.
2. I’ve had some great conversations with the coaching staffs at USM and MSU. I am hoping to leverage their knowledge and capabilities to help develop our players. We hope to have some events on the coast as well as on their respective campuses. In that vein, here is a word from the USM Softball Staff.
“The new Southern Miss Softball Staff would like to invite you to our Coaches Clinic Jan. 21st and 22nd. Clinic registration and info can be found on our camp website: southernmisssoftballcamps.com. Our new staff encourages you to attend. The clinic will include coaching techniques, pitching, hitting and defensive drills and participation in a Southern Miss Softball practice. Discounts for multiple coaches attending from the same school, club or organization are available. If you have any questions, please call Jon Malgradi (602) 301-9019 or Grady Moorhead (602) 980-1036. We hope you can attend!!!”
I personally encourage all coaches to attend. Attached is a flyer with information on the camp.

3. Individual Registration will be going up to $15 per player. This is entirely due to the increase in the cost of insurance. We all really hated to have to do it, but there are lots of reasons for it. Here what’s driving the increase:
a) Everything is more expensive and insurance rates are going up everywhere.
b) We’ve been under a three year contract. That contract expired in December. We’ve been fortunate to have a fixed cost that actually suppressed annual increases.
c) The down economy and unemployment rates means more children don’t have a primary health insurance providers. So the softball insurance becomes the primary resulting in higher expenses.
d) There have a lot of claims with big payouts. Rates are based on the amount of payouts. Bigger payouts mean higher rates.
Be sure to follow the Facebook page. It’s a great way to get information out quickly and being able to interact with everyone. The URL to the group page is below:
